Massage may be the oldest and simplest form of medical care.  It has been used for thousands of years around the world to promote well-being, ease pain of all kinds and relieve anxiety.  A number of studies support its healing role in lowering blood pressure, improving circulation, muscle tone and digestion and promoting relaxation.  Massage is an integral part of most traditional health systems around the world, and different techniques have been developed and incorporated into various complementary therapies.

The Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used massage for therapeutic purposes and it has long been an important part of Tradiitona Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine. For may centuries in the West, massage had a dubious connection with sin and sensuality, but at the end of the 19th century, the Swedish Gymnast, Per Henrik Ling, made therapeutic massage respectable again.  Awareness of the healing value of massage is growing rapidly.  In both the UK and the US, some physiotherapists and nurses are bringing massage therapy into conventional healthcare.  Increasingly, massage is used in intensive-care units, for children, babies in incubators, the elderly, and patients with cancer, AIDS, heart attacks, or stroke.  It is available in some family practices, hospices, drug rehabilitation units and pain clinics.

Touch is our first sensual experience and remain, along with smell, the most immediate and evocative link between mind and body.  The skin is the body’s largest sensory organ, with millions of specialized receptors that react to heat, cold and pressure.  Massage can stimulate the release of endorphins, the natural painkillers produced by the body.

It also induces a feeling of comfort and well-being than can aid relaxation and reduce levels of stress hormones, such as cortisol and noradrenaline, that may otherwise eventually weaken the immune system.  Vigorous massage can directly affect body systems that govern heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, digestion and pain.  As local circulation improves, so does the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the skin and body tissues, and excess tissue fluids are flushed away.  The lymphatic system can then work more effectively to eliminate waste products which cause pain and stiffness in joints and muscles, improving mobility and flexibility.

Psychologically, massage can calm the mind and reduce anxiety so that people are better equipped to cope with stress.  A heightened awareness of the way the mind and body affect one another may help some people take more control of their own well-being.

Massage Treatment

Techniques vary according to which massage method is used, but usually stroking, where the hands glide rhythmically: kneading, in which the hands alternately squeeze and release flesh;friction, when thumb pressure is steadily applied to a point for deep pressure; and hacking, when the sides of the hands deliver alternate short, taps to the body.  Massage techniques are used in other therapies, notably aromatherapy, reflexology, rolfing, hellerwork and osteopathy.
